Standards ensure quality

The Directorate General of Standards of the Secretariat of Economy has among it functions the application of the Federal Law on Metrology and Standardization and the Federal Law of Consumer Protection within the scope of its competence, and the provisions derived from the said laws, in relation to the formulation, review, issue, diffusion and evaluation of compliance to official Mexican standards and Mexican standards.

This section shows you the Official Mexican Standards (NOMs) which may apply depending on the products or services you manufacture, sell and/or import on national territory.


 

Product Standards

Product standards establish the characteristics and/or specifications products must have when they may pose a safety risk for people.

For example:

 

NOM-003-SCFI-2000 Electrical Products-Safety specifications.

NOM-054-SCFI-1998 Domestic Utensils- Pressure cookers- Safety.

NOM-119-SCFI-2000 Car Industry-Automotive Vehicles-Safety Belts-Safety specifications and testing methods

NOM-133/2-SCFI-1999 Baby Products-Operation of strollers, infant safety specifications and testing methods.


Product Information Labeling Standards

 

Product Information Labeling Standards determine the commercial information and requirements that must be met by labels, containers and packaging to give information to the consumer or user.

NOM-004-SCFI-2006 Commercial Information-Labeling of textile products, clothing, clothing accessories and soft furnishings.

NOM-024-SCFI-1998 Commercial information for packaging, instructions for use and guarantees for electronic, electric and household appliances.

NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010 General labeling specifications for pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic drinks-commercial and sanitary information


Metrological Standards


Metrological standards establish the characteristics and specifications related to measuring instruments, measurement standards and their methods of measurement, verification, calibration and traceability.

NOM-005-SCFI-2005 Measuring Instruments-System for measuring and dispensing gasoline and other liquid fuels-Specifications, testing and verification methods.

NOM-008-SCFI-2002 General System of Measurement Units.

NOM-038-SCFI-2000 Weights of Accuracy Classes E1, E2, F1, F2, M1, M2 and M3

NOM-048-SCFI-1997 Measuring Instruments-Time clocks-Fed with different energy sources.


Trade Practices Standards

Trade Practices Standards establish the characteristics and/or specifications that services must meet when they may pose a safety risk to people or in the case of the generalized provision of services to the consumer.

For example:

NOM-028-SCFI-2007 Trade Practices-elements of information in collectible promotions and/or promotions by means of draws and contests.

NOM-036-SCFI-2007 Trade Practices- information requirements for the marketing of funeral services.

NOM-122-SCFI-2010 Trade Practices-regulatory elements for the marketing and/or consignment of used vehicles.

NOM-174-SCFI-2007 Trade Practices-elements of information for the provision of services in general.


Denomination of Origin Standards

To support the denominations of origin for national products.

For example:

NOM-006-SCFI-2005 Alcoholic Drinks-Tequila-Specifications.

NOM-070-SCFI-1994 Alcoholic Drinks-Mezcal-Specifications.

NOM-149-SCFI-2001 Veracruz Coffee-Specifications and testing methods.
